Opening time: 21:00
Kummatty by Aravindan Govindan
In collaboration with the Lemnos Film Club
The second film, the iconic Kummatty (1979) by Aravindan Govindan, will be
screened from a newly restored 2021 print by the U.S. International Film Center,
under the supervision of Martin Scorsese. Through the eyes of a child, the film
celebrates tradition, the magic of everyday life, and nature — a cinematic poem often
hailed as one of the greatest family films in the history of world cinema. This will be
its first theatrical screening in Greece.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Kournos Music Festival honors the historic open-
air cinema “Maroula”, one of the oldest in the Aegean, with a bold cinematic
extravaganza dedicated to children, in collaboration with the Lemnos Film Club.
The festival presents the first nationwide screening in Greece of The Fabulous
Baron Munchausen (1962) by the legendary Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman.
Combining animation, stop-motion, collage, and live action, the film offers a
remarkable audiovisual spectacle centered on the tireless lying baron, in an
aesthetic reminiscent of Gustave Doré’s magical illustrations. Renowned director
Terry Gilliam commented:
"Zeman achieved, in a unique way, what the rest of us are still trying to do: the
combination of live action with animation, composing a magnificent cinematic mural."
The film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964, receiving the Grand
Prix, and has won awards at major international festivals. It remains a fascinating
cinematic curiosity, ready to captivate younger audiences.
